Arkos R36S Setup Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Just got your Arkos R36S? This guide covers everything from first boot to advanced tips — you'll be playing classic games in under 5 minutes.

What's in the Box

  • Arkos R36S console
  • USB-C charging cable
  • 64GB microSD card (pre-installed with thousands of games)

The SD card comes already inserted, so you don't need to do anything before turning it on.

First Boot

  1. Hold the power button (top right) for 2 seconds until the screen lights up
  2. ArkOS boots — this takes about 30 seconds the first time
  3. You'll land on the EmulationStation menu showing your game library organised by console
  4. Use the D-pad to browse, A to select, B to go back

Controls at a Glance

  • Browse consoles — scroll left/right on the main menu
  • Launch a game — highlight it and press A
  • Save state anywhere — press L2 + R2 + Start while in-game
  • Exit a game — press Start + Select, then choose Exit
  • RetroArch settings — press Start + Select for in-game options

Charging

Charge via the USB-C port on the bottom. The console works while charging. A full charge from flat takes around 2 hours and delivers 6–8 hours of play. The battery indicator sits in the top-right corner of the main menu.

Adding More Games

  1. Power off and remove the microSD card from the left side slot
  2. Insert it into your PC using an SD card adapter
  3. Open the card — folders are named by console (SNES, GBA, PSX, etc.)
  4. Drop your ROM files into the matching folder
  5. Eject safely, reinsert into the R36S, and power on
  6. Press Start on the main menu and select "Update Games List"
